The Official Holiday Home Decor Post

“We don’t need new ornaments.” Kyle replied. Even though that wasn’t my question. My question was – “What do you think of these ornaments?” No one needs a box of plastic Christmas ornaments from Hobby Lobby – especially not us, because – as Kyle has so logically pointed out – we have an entire box of Christmas ornaments at home.

But those are bright red, and glittery. And honestly, the red doesn’t go with anything in our living room. Not to be a stick in the mud when it comes to home decor – but every piece of furniture that we own is either black, white, cream or grey. We have zero red accents. We have some gold accents – but no red.

It’s not that I’m anti-color, I just think that the neutral tones make our smaller space look classy and sophisticated.

Okay, fine. So maybe I am a stick in the mud.

“Wouldn’t these look nice?” I suggested, pulling the box of bronze and cream colored ornaments off the shelf. I don’t know why I was expecting him to say – “Those look great! Wow – and they’re ON SALE? Let’s buy them!”

“Why do you want new Christmas ornaments?” he asked. “We have some at home.”

“Because….” I inched them closer towards the cart. “These look…. nice….”

He sighed.

“I’ll just put these in the cart,” I offered. “Just…. just to think about it.” Then quickly added, “We can think about it.” Because, marriage.

“We came here for garland,” he reminded. “You said they have garland here. Where is it?”

That was how I dragged Kyle in here to begin with – to find new garland for our fireplace mantle.. Believe it or not, the craft giant Hobby Lobby is not among his list of favorite stores. (It’s one of mine. Not that I’m crafty, by any means, but when it comes to holiday home decor, they really speak to my vision. Think – if Mrs. Claus hired Joanna Gaines to decorate the North Pole. That’s my vision.)

“Over there!” I said, knowing exactly where it was (because I’d already scouted out what I wanted while he’d been busy looking for LED Christmas lights). “Back here, along the wall.”

Along the wall – a wall filled with strands of greenery adorned with burlap, fake cranberries, bulbs, Christmas lights – you name it, they managed to work it into some garland.

“Great.” He mumbled, but I could tell he didn’t really think it was so great. Christmas decor shopping in general can be overwhelming – but Hobby Lobby can be overwhelming for a husband, all of the burlap and signs with inspirational quotes, and me going around loading up the cart with knick-knacks. It can be a lot to take in.

“Pick something,” he finally said. “What do you want?”

“Garland.” I told him. “To put over the mantle.” Duh. That’s why we’re here.

“Well, pick some out and let’s go.”

He’s so over this.

“Here.” I said, pulling a piece of flocked greenery off its hook and squeezing it into the cart. “This one.”

That one?”

“What’s wrong with it?”

He poked at the leaves sticking out, and the plastic red berries poking out of the ends. Then he shook his head and said, “Nothing. Alright, let’s go.”

“Oh, wait! Tree skirt!” I remembered.

“What?”

“We need a new tree skirt! And I wanted to get something Christmas-y for the bathroom…”

“We need to pick up a new tree skirt!” Oh shoot, and the bathroom. “AND I wanted to get something Christmas-y for the bathroom….”

“Ugh…” <—- Audible groans from Kyle.

Eventually – way too many Christmas items later – we made our way out of Hobby Lobby. (Just in case you’ve been wondering, this post is in no way sponsored or affiliated with Hobby Lobby. I just really like their Christmas decor, and the story above really happened…. at a Hobby Lobby. Where all good stories start.)

In case you’re still shopping for your own Christmas decor, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite pieces below, so that you don’t have to listen to your own husband grumble if he decides to come Christmas shopping with you. At least for decor. You guys are on your own for the presents.
